  4. Finish with the journal: draw and write one sentence about each stage.

Learning Benefits

Life cycles are a core early science topic. These pages follow the real order – egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly – and ask children to recognise, name, order and describe each stage. That progression moves from simple recall to explaining in their own words.

Age Range

Ages 4-8 (pre-K to 2nd grade). Picture-based, with simple words to copy.

Variations and Extension Ideas

  • Raise real caterpillars in spring and fill in the journal as they change.
  • Act out the life cycle: curl up as an egg, crawl, wrap up, then fly.
  • Read a caterpillar picture book first, then do the worksheets.
  • Pair with our chick coloring pages to compare life cycles.

Printing Tips

  • Print at 100% (Actual size) so the boxes and lines stay the right size for small handwriting.
  • Slip a page into a sheet protector and use a dry-erase marker to reuse it all week.
  • Print the answer key separately and keep it in a folder for quick checking.
  • Print the Cut and Sequence page on cardstock so the small pictures are easier to cut and glue.
