How to Use These Shapes Worksheets

  1. Say the name of each shape as you trace it.
  2. Follow the color rule at the top of the Color by Shape page.
  3. Count each shape in the Shape Hunt picture.
  4. Draw each shape on the last page without tracing.

Learning Benefits

Recognising and naming shapes is an early geometry skill and helps with letter formation (circles and lines make up most letters). The pages move from tracing, to sorting by color, to finding shapes in a picture, to drawing them independently.

Age Range

Ages 3-6 (preschool and kindergarten).

Variations and Extension Ideas

  • Go on a real shape hunt at home: clocks are circles, books are rectangles.
  • Make shapes with playdough or sticks before tracing.
  • Cut shapes from colored paper and make a picture.
  • Play 'I spy a shape' in the car.

Printing Tips

  • Print at 100% (Actual size) so the boxes and lines stay the right size for small handwriting.
  • Slip a page into a sheet protector and use a dry-erase marker to reuse it all week.
  • Print the answer key separately and keep it in a folder for quick checking.
  • Trace the dashed shapes with a crayon first – it is easier for small hands than a pencil.
